MD80S flight crew sequenced for visual approach was high and fast on final for dfw runway 17C. Due to aircraft confign and position, aircraft overshot runway 17C final. Approach control recognized changing traffic condition and changed MD80S to runway 17R. Air carrier landed without further incident.

Narrative:
We were told by approach control to follow traffic for runway 17C but not cleared for visual approach. We were high and fast due to approach control keeping us high. Saw traffic and started turning to follow because passing through localizer course. Tower cleared us to land runway 17R with no conflict.
