Narrative:
On jan/xa/98, I flew from sdl to smo, missed the VOR-a approach, and executed the missed approach. As I climbed out on the missed approach, I suddenly realized, literally for the first time in the entire flight, that I had not specified an alternate in my flight plan. Moreover, I was low on fuel. I reported my fuel status to the controller and received vectors to vny. After my initial course to vny was established, another controller came on the frequency, asked me for my fuel status which the fuel gauges showed was 4 gallons remaining, and provided me with additional vectors to vny until I had the field in sight. I was asked to change frequency to the vny tower, flew a short final, and landed uneventfully. I had 3 gallons remaining after landing, taxiing, and engine shutdown.

Title: PA28-181 PLT ENCOUNTERED WX WHICH REQUIRED A MISSED APCH AND DIVERSION. RPTR PLT HAD NOT FUEL PLANNED ADEQUATELY AND WAS VERY LOW ON FUEL WHEN RECEIVING ATC ASSISTANCE. CTLRS AIDED HIM IN FINDING A CLOSE ARPT AND LNDG.

AS I CLBED OUT ON THE MISSED APCH, I SUDDENLY REALIZED, LITERALLY FOR THE FIRST TIME IN THE ENTIRE FLT, THAT I HAD NOT SPECIFIED AN ALTERNATE IN MY FLT PLAN. MOREOVER, I WAS LOW ON FUEL. I RPTED MY FUEL STATUS TO THE CTLR AND RECEIVED VECTORS TO VNY. AFTER MY INITIAL COURSE TO VNY WAS ESTABLISHED, ANOTHER CTLR CAME ON THE FREQ, ASKED ME FOR MY FUEL STATUS WHICH THE FUEL GAUGES SHOWED WAS 4 GALLONS REMAINING, AND PROVIDED ME WITH ADDITIONAL VECTORS TO VNY UNTIL I HAD THE FIELD IN SIGHT. I WAS ASKED TO CHANGE FREQ TO THE VNY TWR,FLEW A SHORT FINAL, AND LANDED UNEVENTFULLY. I HAD 3 GALLONS REMAINING AFTER LNDG, TAXIING, AND ENG SHUTDOWN.
