Narrative:
This was a flight from sav to atl. Takeoff, climb and initial cruise uneventful. Approximately 15 mi southeast of dbn VOR, ZTL cleared us to hold over dbn as published with an efc of XX18Z. A direct entry was made and one complete circuit completed. We had requested 10 mi legs but this was denied. Approximately 30 degrees into the next turn, center said that he observed us in a right turn over dbn and that he had cleared us to sinca intersection. Neither the first officer nor a DOD inspector, an experienced military C141 pilot conducting a safety inspection for the DOD, on the jump seat heard this. The first officer had relayed back only the dbn hold which was received by the controller without comment. We rejoined the sinca arrival to atl without difficulty and landed at atl uneventfully. Whether or not some interference occurred which blocked the controller's instructions to sinca, I cannot say. I do know that all 3 of us in the cockpit understood to hold at dbn and that the controller did not correct the first officer's readback of that understanding.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: FLC OF B737-200 IS ISSUED A HOLD AND ON THE SECOND TURN IN THE HOLD CTLR SAYS HE CLRED THEM TO HOLD AT A DIFFERENT INTXN. NEITHER CREW MEMBER NOR THE JUMP SEATER FROM DOD HEARD SUCH A CLRNC.
Narrative: THIS WAS A FLT FROM SAV TO ATL. TKOF, CLB AND INITIAL CRUISE UNEVENTFUL. APPROX 15 MI SE OF DBN VOR, ZTL CLRED US TO HOLD OVER DBN AS PUBLISHED WITH AN EFC OF XX18Z. A DIRECT ENTRY WAS MADE AND ONE COMPLETE CIRCUIT COMPLETED. WE HAD REQUESTED 10 MI LEGS BUT THIS WAS DENIED. APPROX 30 DEGS INTO THE NEXT TURN, CTR SAID THAT HE OBSERVED US IN A R TURN OVER DBN AND THAT HE HAD CLRED US TO SINCA INTXN. NEITHER THE FO NOR A DOD INSPECTOR, AN EXPERIENCED MIL C141 PLT CONDUCTING A SAFETY INSPECTION FOR THE DOD, ON THE JUMP SEAT HEARD THIS. THE FO HAD RELAYED BACK ONLY THE DBN HOLD WHICH WAS RECEIVED BY THE CTLR WITHOUT COMMENT. WE REJOINED THE SINCA ARR TO ATL WITHOUT DIFFICULTY AND LANDED AT ATL UNEVENTFULLY. WHETHER OR NOT SOME INTERFERENCE OCCURRED WHICH BLOCKED THE CTLR'S INSTRUCTIONS TO SINCA, I CANNOT SAY. I DO KNOW THAT ALL 3 OF US IN THE COCKPIT UNDERSTOOD TO HOLD AT DBN AND THAT THE CTLR DID NOT CORRECT THE FO'S READBACK OF THAT UNDERSTANDING.
