Narrative:

Landing at ord, propellers split with #1 70% np and #2 89% np creating asymmetric thrust and forcing us off centerline. First officer handed aircraft immediately over to me trying to maintain wind correction in crosswind conditions. It took all I could muster to keep aircraft from a runway excursion. Similar ATR72- 2RA's have had control problems with their propeller electronic control system when landing, so air carrier officials had the flight data recorder pulled for a readout. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: the reporter stated the aircraft was 1 of 12 aircraft in the air carrier fleet equipped with a propeller electronic control system which the reporter believes is the cause of asymmetric thrust problems. The reporter said this is the third incident of asymmetric thrust on landing causing control problems on rollout. The reporter said the maintenance action taken on this airplane was adjusting the fuel control but the reporter has no confidence in this fix. The flight data recorder was no help as it was not the newer modified type which would record this engine parameter.

Title: AN ATR72-2RA ON LNDG ROLLOUT THE PROPS IN REVERSE DEVELOPED ASYMMETRICAL THRUST CAUSING DIFFICULT ACFT CTL PROBS.

Narrative: LNDG AT ORD, PROPS SPLIT WITH #1 70% NP AND #2 89% NP CREATING ASYMMETRIC THRUST AND FORCING US OFF CTRLINE. FO HANDED ACFT IMMEDIATELY OVER TO ME TRYING TO MAINTAIN WIND CORRECTION IN XWIND CONDITIONS. IT TOOK ALL I COULD MUSTER TO KEEP ACFT FROM A RWY EXCURSION. SIMILAR ATR72- 2RA'S HAVE HAD CTL PROBS WITH THEIR PROP ELECTRONIC CTL SYS WHEN LNDG, SO ACR OFFICIALS HAD THE FLT DATA RECORDER PULLED FOR A READOUT. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: THE RPTR STATED THE ACFT WAS 1 OF 12 ACFT IN THE ACR FLEET EQUIPPED WITH A PROP ELECTRONIC CTL SYS WHICH THE RPTR BELIEVES IS THE CAUSE OF ASYMMETRIC THRUST PROBS. THE RPTR SAID THIS IS THE THIRD INCIDENT OF ASYMMETRIC THRUST ON LNDG CAUSING CTL PROBS ON ROLLOUT. THE RPTR SAID THE MAINT ACTION TAKEN ON THIS AIRPLANE WAS ADJUSTING THE FUEL CTL BUT THE RPTR HAS NO CONFIDENCE IN THIS FIX. THE FLT DATA RECORDER WAS NO HELP AS IT WAS NOT THE NEWER MODIFIED TYPE WHICH WOULD RECORD THIS ENG PARAMETER.
