Narrative:
En route cvg to dfw, FL310, light to moderate chop. Asked ZID frequency 132.52 about rides lower. He told us to descend to FL240 to see if we could find a smooth ride. Between FL300 and FL290 center asked our altitude and told us to climb back to FL310. Seemed to be a different voice. When I asked about the clearance to FL240 we had received, he sounded like he had made a mistake and reclred us to FL240.
