Narrative:
While accepting an aircraft from another captain, I was informed by that captain that there was an MEL item. I visually checked that the item was MEL'ed and appropriately placarded as per company policy. I did not check the logbook write-up on the MEL. When I got to my destination, I was ramp checked by the FAA. They said the previous captain's write-up for the MEL was incorrect. I checked our operations manual and said that I concurred. It was the failure on my part to check the write-up and ensure it was correct before I accepted the aircraft that led to this problem. I will endeavor to check the paperwork beforehand and not just accept things on a verbal.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: FAA INSPECTOR FOUND AN MEL DISCREPANCY ITEM WRITTEN UP INCORRECTLY IN THE ACFT LOGBOOK RECORD OF A FAIRCHILD SWEARINGEN SA227 METRO (FA22). THE CAPT, WHO HAD JUST COMPLETED A FLT, ALSO FOUND THAT IT WAS NOT CORRECT ACCORDING TO COMPANY OPS MANUAL. HE HAD NOT REVIEWED THE WRITE-UP PRIOR TO ACCEPTING THE ACFT FOR ASSIGNMENT.
Narrative: WHILE ACCEPTING AN ACFT FROM ANOTHER CAPT, I WAS INFORMED BY THAT CAPT THAT THERE WAS AN MEL ITEM. I VISUALLY CHKED THAT THE ITEM WAS MEL'ED AND APPROPRIATELY PLACARDED AS PER COMPANY POLICY. I DID NOT CHK THE LOGBOOK WRITE-UP ON THE MEL. WHEN I GOT TO MY DEST, I WAS RAMP CHKED BY THE FAA. THEY SAID THE PREVIOUS CAPT'S WRITE-UP FOR THE MEL WAS INCORRECT. I CHKED OUR OPS MANUAL AND SAID THAT I CONCURRED. IT WAS THE FAILURE ON MY PART TO CHK THE WRITE-UP AND ENSURE IT WAS CORRECT BEFORE I ACCEPTED THE ACFT THAT LED TO THIS PROB. I WILL ENDEAVOR TO CHK THE PAPERWORK BEFOREHAND AND NOT JUST ACCEPT THINGS ON A VERBAL.
