Narrative:
I was the PF. Just prior to departing on runway 30, I had briefed my partner (copilot) on our departure. We were to turn left to 120 degrees and intercept the 166 degree radial to ubg VOR, climbing to 4000 ft. The tower gave us an amended altitude of 1500 ft as we were taking the runway. I did not hear the new altitude instruction. I must have been distracted. My copilot did set the new altitude into the alerter. After departure, while turning to 120 degrees, the alerter went off, and I queried him about the 1500 ft that was set, thinking that I must have not set 4000 ft as I had briefed. At 1800 ft, I started to level off and push the nose down. My copilot confirmed the amended altitude of 1500 ft. I pushed it over to 1500 ft, received clearance to 15000 ft just as I leveled at 1500 ft. This was just about the time we reached a left downwind for runway 30 on departure. We climbed to our assigned altitude with no further discrepancies. This was my error. I will be more vigilant for last min conversation from ATC, expecting a potential change.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: LTT CPR ACFT DEPARTING ARPT RPTR CAPT DIDN'T HEAR THE LAST ALT ASSIGNMENT BY TWR AND FLEW THROUGH IT. FO ALERTED HIM TO THE NEW ALT AND ACFT WAS RETURNED TO IT.
Narrative: I WAS THE PF. JUST PRIOR TO DEPARTING ON RWY 30, I HAD BRIEFED MY PARTNER (COPLT) ON OUR DEP. WE WERE TO TURN L TO 120 DEGS AND INTERCEPT THE 166 DEG RADIAL TO UBG VOR, CLBING TO 4000 FT. THE TWR GAVE US AN AMENDED ALT OF 1500 FT AS WE WERE TAKING THE RWY. I DID NOT HEAR THE NEW ALT INSTRUCTION. I MUST HAVE BEEN DISTRACTED. MY COPLT DID SET THE NEW ALT INTO THE ALERTER. AFTER DEP, WHILE TURNING TO 120 DEGS, THE ALERTER WENT OFF, AND I QUERIED HIM ABOUT THE 1500 FT THAT WAS SET, THINKING THAT I MUST HAVE NOT SET 4000 FT AS I HAD BRIEFED. AT 1800 FT, I STARTED TO LEVEL OFF AND PUSH THE NOSE DOWN. MY COPLT CONFIRMED THE AMENDED ALT OF 1500 FT. I PUSHED IT OVER TO 1500 FT, RECEIVED CLRNC TO 15000 FT JUST AS I LEVELED AT 1500 FT. THIS WAS JUST ABOUT THE TIME WE REACHED A L DOWNWIND FOR RWY 30 ON DEP. WE CLBED TO OUR ASSIGNED ALT WITH NO FURTHER DISCREPANCIES. THIS WAS MY ERROR. I WILL BE MORE VIGILANT FOR LAST MIN CONVERSATION FROM ATC, EXPECTING A POTENTIAL CHANGE.
