Narrative:
Climbing out of dtw we requested 14000 ft as a final direct azo. ZOB gave us a strange clearance that I requested to repeat. When he did, I read it back and he said ok that is it. I thought we were cleared to 14000 ft and when crossing harwl (37 DME dtw/pal 2 SID) direct to azo. Climbing out of 12500 ft, center asked us our altitude. He said we were cleared to 11000 ft, when crossing harwl, cleared to 14000 ft direct azo. There were no conflicts. We apologized to the center, he said no problem and we continued on our flight with no further problems.

Narrative: CLBING OUT OF DTW WE REQUESTED 14000 FT AS A FINAL DIRECT AZO. ZOB GAVE US A STRANGE CLRNC THAT I REQUESTED TO REPEAT. WHEN HE DID, I READ IT BACK AND HE SAID OK THAT IS IT. I THOUGHT WE WERE CLRED TO 14000 FT AND WHEN XING HARWL (37 DME DTW/PAL 2 SID) DIRECT TO AZO. CLBING OUT OF 12500 FT, CTR ASKED US OUR ALT. HE SAID WE WERE CLRED TO 11000 FT, WHEN XING HARWL, CLRED TO 14000 FT DIRECT AZO. THERE WERE NO CONFLICTS. WE APOLOGIZED TO THE CTR, HE SAID NO PROB AND WE CONTINUED ON OUR FLT WITH NO FURTHER PROBS.
