Narrative:
We were given a 'hold short runway 13' by stl ground at taxiway C coming from the north side. As we were holding short, our call sign was transmitted by ground, after which we heard 'to runway 12R.' I asked my first officer what the instructions were and was told to cross over to runway 12L. I was confused as to what ground actually wanted but assumed that since an aircraft was rolling out on runway 13 and my first officer's readback was not challenged by ground, that they wanted us to cross. When my first officer told me 'I think they want us over to runway 12R' I became suspicious. I held short of runway 12L and told him to call tower. Tower then gave me a number to call. The moral of this is, if confused or uncomfortable about a clearance, stop and ask! I should have slowed everything down. If I had asked, I would've known not to cross runway 13.

Title: AN ACR BA4101 TAXIES ACROSS RWY 13 WITHOUT CLRNC TO RWY 12L. THE FO THOUGHT HE HAD HEARD THEIR FLT NUMBER AND A '...TO RWY 12R.'
Narrative: WE WERE GIVEN A 'HOLD SHORT RWY 13' BY STL GND AT TXWY C COMING FROM THE N SIDE. AS WE WERE HOLDING SHORT, OUR CALL SIGN WAS XMITTED BY GND, AFTER WHICH WE HEARD 'TO RWY 12R.' I ASKED MY FO WHAT THE INSTRUCTIONS WERE AND WAS TOLD TO CROSS OVER TO RWY 12L. I WAS CONFUSED AS TO WHAT GND ACTUALLY WANTED BUT ASSUMED THAT SINCE AN ACFT WAS ROLLING OUT ON RWY 13 AND MY FO'S READBACK WAS NOT CHALLENGED BY GND, THAT THEY WANTED US TO CROSS. WHEN MY FO TOLD ME 'I THINK THEY WANT US OVER TO RWY 12R' I BECAME SUSPICIOUS. I HELD SHORT OF RWY 12L AND TOLD HIM TO CALL TWR. TWR THEN GAVE ME A NUMBER TO CALL. THE MORAL OF THIS IS, IF CONFUSED OR UNCOMFORTABLE ABOUT A CLRNC, STOP AND ASK! I SHOULD HAVE SLOWED EVERYTHING DOWN. IF I HAD ASKED, I WOULD'VE KNOWN NOT TO CROSS RWY 13.
