Narrative:
We were assigned an aircraft with the 'lift dumper system' completely inoperative, and had very little time in between flts to deal with this due to distance between gates. It wasn't until the agent had closed the door that I had a chance to perform the MEL calculations and saw that we were overweight for runway 4R and only about 100 pounds legal for runway 13C. I was unable to raise dispatch on any listed frequency and had to have the jet bridge reattached in order to have a discussion with the dispatcher. We were then given a new aircraft. This was the first time for the crew to go into midway, and first for the dispatcher to work a midway flight. Let this serve as heads up to everyone as to the critical nature of midway operations. It's sporting enough without anything placarded inoperative on the aircraft.

Title: FK10 CREW WAS DISPATCHED TO A SHORT RWY ARPT WITH A LNDG WT LIMITING MEL ITEM. AFTER DISCUSSION WITH THE DISPATCHER AN ACFT CHANGE WAS AGREED ON.
Narrative: WE WERE ASSIGNED AN ACFT WITH THE 'LIFT DUMPER SYS' COMPLETELY INOP, AND HAD VERY LITTLE TIME IN BTWN FLTS TO DEAL WITH THIS DUE TO DISTANCE BTWN GATES. IT WASN'T UNTIL THE AGENT HAD CLOSED THE DOOR THAT I HAD A CHANCE TO PERFORM THE MEL CALCULATIONS AND SAW THAT WE WERE OVERWT FOR RWY 4R AND ONLY ABOUT 100 LBS LEGAL FOR RWY 13C. I WAS UNABLE TO RAISE DISPATCH ON ANY LISTED FREQ AND HAD TO HAVE THE JET BRIDGE REATTACHED IN ORDER TO HAVE A DISCUSSION WITH THE DISPATCHER. WE WERE THEN GIVEN A NEW ACFT. THIS WAS THE FIRST TIME FOR THE CREW TO GO INTO MIDWAY, AND FIRST FOR THE DISPATCHER TO WORK A MIDWAY FLT. LET THIS SERVE AS HEADS UP TO EVERYONE AS TO THE CRITICAL NATURE OF MIDWAY OPS. IT'S SPORTING ENOUGH WITHOUT ANYTHING PLACARDED INOP ON THE ACFT.
