Narrative:
On climb, first officer (who military C130 pilot), advised that we were to pick up the 210 degree radial off hyk VOR. I asked about it as our filed flight plan shows the 120 degree radial. I showed it to him on the map and he noted the 120 degree radial was correct. As I made my required calls to company, I was off line. As I returned, he stated we were to join the 210 degree radial, not the 120 degree radial and that was the new clearance. He returned the aircraft to pick it up and the center advised us we had just passed through the 120 degree radial and to just fly direct to the next VOR. We did. Causes are: 1) first officer's fixation on what he thought was the correct radial (transposed 210 to 120?). 2) he had the map, I showed him the airway and even though he stated ATC wanted us to fly the 210 degree radial, I should have checked. Prevention: check out everything even if first officer's have flown everything, everywhere. If you have any questions, check it out and if he states ATC said so, ask ATC yourself. You cannot be too safe.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: FO OF AN ACR TURBOPROP FAILED TO INTERCEPT CLRNC RADIAL DURING DEP CLB RESULTING IN CTLR INTERVENTION TO DIRECT RPTR'S ACFT ON COURSE.
Narrative: ON CLB, FO (WHO MIL C130 PLT), ADVISED THAT WE WERE TO PICK UP THE 210 DEG RADIAL OFF HYK VOR. I ASKED ABOUT IT AS OUR FILED FLT PLAN SHOWS THE 120 DEG RADIAL. I SHOWED IT TO HIM ON THE MAP AND HE NOTED THE 120 DEG RADIAL WAS CORRECT. AS I MADE MY REQUIRED CALLS TO COMPANY, I WAS OFF LINE. AS I RETURNED, HE STATED WE WERE TO JOIN THE 210 DEG RADIAL, NOT THE 120 DEG RADIAL AND THAT WAS THE NEW CLRNC. HE RETURNED THE ACFT TO PICK IT UP AND THE CTR ADVISED US WE HAD JUST PASSED THROUGH THE 120 DEG RADIAL AND TO JUST FLY DIRECT TO THE NEXT VOR. WE DID. CAUSES ARE: 1) FO'S FIXATION ON WHAT HE THOUGHT WAS THE CORRECT RADIAL (TRANSPOSED 210 TO 120?). 2) HE HAD THE MAP, I SHOWED HIM THE AIRWAY AND EVEN THOUGH HE STATED ATC WANTED US TO FLY THE 210 DEG RADIAL, I SHOULD HAVE CHKED. PREVENTION: CHK OUT EVERYTHING EVEN IF FO'S HAVE FLOWN EVERYTHING, EVERYWHERE. IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS, CHK IT OUT AND IF HE STATES ATC SAID SO, ASK ATC YOURSELF. YOU CANNOT BE TOO SAFE.
