Narrative:
This was my first flight in a C170 as starting instruction towards my taildragger endorsement. The flight originated at bna with direct to mqy for touch and goes. My instructor was having me perform high speed taxiing. We were completing the 3RD taxi on the runway, speed reduced and tailwheel having touched down when the aircraft suddenly veered to the right. The aircraft left the runway and ground looped. The left main hit a rut (a contributing factor) and skidded to the left. The airplane stopped and tipped to the left damaging the left main, left wingtip, and left elevator. No injuries. The wind may have gotten under the right wing, lifting it. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: reporter stated that the FAA investigated this incident and classified it as an incident only. However, the pilot instructor was notified that he would be re-examined for his flight instructor competency. Reporter further stated that he needs more training in tailwheel type aircraft and was given some useful guidelines in maintaining directional control by analyst.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: PLT RECEIVING INSTRUCTION IN TAILWHEEL TYPE ACFT LOST DIRECTIONAL CTL OF THE ACFT DURING FAST TAXI ON A RWY RESULTING IN GOING OFF THE SIDE OF THE RWY AND GND LOOPING. THE ACFT'S L MAIN GEAR, WINGTIP AND ELEVATOR WERE DAMAGED. THE FAA INVESTIGATED THIS INCIDENT AND CLASSIFIED IT AS AN INCIDENT.
Narrative: THIS WAS MY FIRST FLT IN A C170 AS STARTING INSTRUCTION TOWARDS MY TAILDRAGGER ENDORSEMENT. THE FLT ORIGINATED AT BNA WITH DIRECT TO MQY FOR TOUCH AND GOES. MY INSTRUCTOR WAS HAVING ME PERFORM HIGH SPD TAXIING. WE WERE COMPLETING THE 3RD TAXI ON THE RWY, SPD REDUCED AND TAILWHEEL HAVING TOUCHED DOWN WHEN THE ACFT SUDDENLY VEERED TO THE R. THE ACFT LEFT THE RWY AND GND LOOPED. THE L MAIN HIT A RUT (A CONTRIBUTING FACTOR) AND SKIDDED TO THE L. THE AIRPLANE STOPPED AND TIPPED TO THE L DAMAGING THE L MAIN, L WINGTIP, AND L ELEVATOR. NO INJURIES. THE WIND MAY HAVE GOTTEN UNDER THE R WING, LIFTING IT. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: RPTR STATED THAT THE FAA INVESTIGATED THIS INCIDENT AND CLASSIFIED IT AS AN INCIDENT ONLY. HOWEVER, THE PLT INSTRUCTOR WAS NOTIFIED THAT HE WOULD BE RE-EXAMINED FOR HIS FLT INSTRUCTOR COMPETENCY. RPTR FURTHER STATED THAT HE NEEDS MORE TRAINING IN TAILWHEEL TYPE ACFT AND WAS GIVEN SOME USEFUL GUIDELINES IN MAINTAINING DIRECTIONAL CTL BY ANALYST.
