Narrative:
We were told to cross stefe intersection at 12000 ft MSL. I looked at the chart and determined that stefe was 24 DME on the 053 degree radial of dqo. Then later the first officer looked at chart and said stefe was 37 DME on the 053 degree radial. I glanced at chart and agreed with him. Stefe and somto are very close together and it is a very busy chart and we somehow idented stefe to be where somto is. Center came on and questioned our rate of descent and we replied 2000 FPM. He then said we had passed the stefe intersection. I immediately applied spoilers and we descended rapidly and reached 12000 ft approximately 4 mi past stefe.
