Narrative:

I was working the south area at ZAU. A line of severe thunderstorms was impacting the operation. The line ran from stc-dec-vhp-fwr- fdy-cle. In addition to normal traffic, flow control sent many east departures out to the south on 'WX avoidance.' at about XA45, all controllers assigned to the shift were working with no one on break. The radar controller at the bvt sector asked for additional help and none was available. Also, the assistant controller, or a-side, was not able to be staffed. Safety of the operation was compromised. I advised the union representative of the situation and filled out this form. This is a continuing problem at ZAU and the problem is becoming worse.
