Narrative:
50 mi southwest of clt, contacted ZTL for radar advisories and clearance through class B airspace. They switched me to greer approach who sent me to clt approach who had me contact clt on a different frequency. The controller tried several times to get our aircraft n-number and destination correct. He gave us a squawk and then went on to handle other aircraft. Since he did not tell me to remain clear of class B airspace, I assumed I was cleared to continue. Abeam clt airport, he advised me that I was well inside class B airspace without a clearance. That was a true statement insofar as he did not ever say cleared through class B airspace. But he did lead me to believe I had a clearance when he gave me a squawk.
