Narrative:
En route from phl to sju on A300 38 mi north of downt encountered severe turbulence. Used captain emergency authority/authorized to descend from FL290 to FL270. No aircraft were observed either on TCASII or visually. Shortly after declaring an emergency ATC through oceanic cleared us to FL270. Flight attendants had already put away carts and taken their seats, therefore, no injuries, no known damage to aircraft.

Title: A B727 ON A300 AT FL290 TO SJU EXPERIENCES SEVERE TURB AND DSNDS TO FL270. AN EMER WAS DECLARED WITH NY RADIO.
Narrative: ENRTE FROM PHL TO SJU ON A300 38 MI N OF DOWNT ENCOUNTERED SEVERE TURB. USED CAPT EMER AUTH TO DSND FROM FL290 TO FL270. NO ACFT WERE OBSERVED EITHER ON TCASII OR VISUALLY. SHORTLY AFTER DECLARING AN EMER ATC THROUGH OCEANIC CLRED US TO FL270. FLT ATTENDANTS HAD ALREADY PUT AWAY CARTS AND TAKEN THEIR SEATS, THEREFORE, NO INJURIES, NO KNOWN DAMAGE TO ACFT.
