Narrative:

On the climb out from runway 4R, the left engine began to lose power. The engine would then rev up and repeat the cycle. At times, the engine failed totally and there was no power for a brief interval. We immediately continued the left turn (which was originally induced by the engine failure and entered the downwind for an uneventful landing. The mechanic determined that there was no water in the fuel drainage. However, on run- up, it was determined that a hard foreign object was lodged in the carburetor, which at times blocked the flow of the fuel. The object was cleared and the aircraft was returned to service.
