Narrative:

ATC advised to descend to FL190 from FL210 while I was avoiding a thunderstorm and trying to go direct to the la grange VOR. Copilot was getting the ATIS and was out of the loop. I was talking to ATC, watching the thunderstorm visually and turning left to the VOR. Autoplt failed to capture the altitude and the alerter came on 300 ft low. I went back to the assigned altitude immediately. Distrs, failure to comply with SOP's and trusting the autoplt caused the problem. Lack of attention due to distrs.
