Narrative:

Taxied out of ramp onto active taxiway prior to getting ATC clearance. After realizing this, I stopped the aircraft after making the turn onto taxiway D, told the first officer to call ground control (which was very busy). At that point, ground control called us and was noticeably upset at us. I apologized. My flight started out of ewr 4 hours late. We dodged thunderstorms, flying to sdf and got in at XA30, very late. We shortly learned company had major computer problems and all flight plans had to be done by hand. This caused us to leave another 3 hours late. I am also a new captain with only 55 hours in the seat, still trying to get the scenario down. I have learned to make sure the first officer gets a taxi clearance prior to calling for the 'before takeoff checklist.' this may have caused just enough of a distraction to not call ATC at the ramp throat.

Narrative: TAXIED OUT OF RAMP ONTO ACTIVE TXWY PRIOR TO GETTING ATC CLRNC. AFTER REALIZING THIS, I STOPPED THE ACFT AFTER MAKING THE TURN ONTO TXWY D, TOLD THE FO TO CALL GND CTL (WHICH WAS VERY BUSY). AT THAT POINT, GND CTL CALLED US AND WAS NOTICEABLY UPSET AT US. I APOLOGIZED. MY FLT STARTED OUT OF EWR 4 HRS LATE. WE DODGED TSTMS, FLYING TO SDF AND GOT IN AT XA30, VERY LATE. WE SHORTLY LEARNED COMPANY HAD MAJOR COMPUTER PROBS AND ALL FLT PLANS HAD TO BE DONE BY HAND. THIS CAUSED US TO LEAVE ANOTHER 3 HRS LATE. I AM ALSO A NEW CAPT WITH ONLY 55 HRS IN THE SEAT, STILL TRYING TO GET THE SCENARIO DOWN. I HAVE LEARNED TO MAKE SURE THE FO GETS A TAXI CLRNC PRIOR TO CALLING FOR THE 'BEFORE TKOF CHKLIST.' THIS MAY HAVE CAUSED JUST ENOUGH OF A DISTR TO NOT CALL ATC AT THE RAMP THROAT.
