Narrative:
After takeoff while setting climb power the #1 engine surged twice. After the second surge the torque rolled back to 0%. We then declared an emergency and requested crash fire rescue equipment, performed the precautionary shutdown checklist from the QRH and returned to the airport for a single engine landing on runway 17R. The landing was uneventful and we taxied to the gate and deplaned the passenger in normal fashion.
