Narrative:
While departing flight XXX on jul/xa/98 at XA55 from atl runway 8R, encountered an extremely loud bang accompanied by a physically felt bump at V1 (140 KTS). Rejected takeoff due to uncertainty of aircraft structural integrity and considering I had 6000 ft of dry runway remaining. Abort was performed without incident and cleared the runway. A conversation on the interphone with the flight attendant in charge revealed that the sound and bump was caused by galley equipment becoming dislodged and falling to the floor. A check of the operational data manual called for a 100 min brake cool-down time. On the taxiway, residual heat from the hot brakes dissipating into the tires caused 6 of the 8 main landing gear tires to deflate. Maintenance was called out to inspect. Passenger were deplaned through forward left entry door by airstairs and taken by busses to terminal. Aircraft was replaced and flight resumed (flight from atl-lax) without further incident. No injuries or damage were sustained, except the tire change.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: AN ACR LGT PIC ABORTS THE TKOF AT ATL WHEN HE HEARS A LOUD BANG AND A THUMP DURING TKOF ROLL AT V1 SPD OF 140 KTS. 6 OF 8 TIRES DEFLATE ON TAXI BACK. A LOOSE PIECE OF GALLEY EQUIP WAS THE DISTR TO THE FLC.
Narrative: WHILE DEPARTING FLT XXX ON JUL/XA/98 AT XA55 FROM ATL RWY 8R, ENCOUNTERED AN EXTREMELY LOUD BANG ACCOMPANIED BY A PHYSICALLY FELT BUMP AT V1 (140 KTS). REJECTED TKOF DUE TO UNCERTAINTY OF ACFT STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY AND CONSIDERING I HAD 6000 FT OF DRY RWY REMAINING. ABORT WAS PERFORMED WITHOUT INCIDENT AND CLRED THE RWY. A CONVERSATION ON THE INTERPHONE WITH THE FLT ATTENDANT IN CHARGE REVEALED THAT THE SOUND AND BUMP WAS CAUSED BY GALLEY EQUIP BECOMING DISLODGED AND FALLING TO THE FLOOR. A CHK OF THE OPERATIONAL DATA MANUAL CALLED FOR A 100 MIN BRAKE COOL-DOWN TIME. ON THE TXWY, RESIDUAL HEAT FROM THE HOT BRAKES DISSIPATING INTO THE TIRES CAUSED 6 OF THE 8 MAIN LNDG GEAR TIRES TO DEFLATE. MAINT WAS CALLED OUT TO INSPECT. PAX WERE DEPLANED THROUGH FORWARD L ENTRY DOOR BY AIRSTAIRS AND TAKEN BY BUSSES TO TERMINAL. ACFT WAS REPLACED AND FLT RESUMED (FLT FROM ATL-LAX) WITHOUT FURTHER INCIDENT. NO INJURIES OR DAMAGE WERE SUSTAINED, EXCEPT THE TIRE CHANGE.
