Narrative:
Climb out from runway 6R. Flight XXX yyz-lga, departure normal. At 3000 ft AGL I observed smoke in the cockpit and smelled an electrical burning smell. I donned mask and pulled out goggles and first officer did the same. I notified flight attendants and made a quick PA. Completed all checklists and landed. Landing was overweight. After landing fire chief saw no smoke coming from the aircraft and smoke had dissipated in cockpit so I elected to taxi to the gate. No other problems noted. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: reporter stated, maintenance found an APU bearing failure. The crew shut down the APU at 2000 ft. This allowed a quantity of turbine oil to be dumped into the pneumatic system. As the air was heated by passing through the packs, visible smoke and odor resulted. Maintenance 'burned out' the pneumatic system and the trip departed with an inoperative APU. The captain was especially complimentary of handling by the yyz tower and crash fire rescue equipment personnel. The trip left about 1 hour late and was uneventful.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: FK10 CREW HAD SMOKE IN THE COCKPIT REACHING 3000 FT ON CLB. CREW FOLLOWED CHKLIST AND DONNED OXYGEN MASKS AND SMOKE GOGGLES. CREW RETURNED TO DEP ARPT AND LANDED OVERWT.
Narrative: CLBOUT FROM RWY 6R. FLT XXX YYZ-LGA, DEP NORMAL. AT 3000 FT AGL I OBSERVED SMOKE IN THE COCKPIT AND SMELLED AN ELECTRICAL BURNING SMELL. I DONNED MASK AND PULLED OUT GOGGLES AND FO DID THE SAME. I NOTIFIED FLT ATTENDANTS AND MADE A QUICK PA. COMPLETED ALL CHKLISTS AND LANDED. LNDG WAS OVERWT. AFTER LNDG FIRE CHIEF SAW NO SMOKE COMING FROM THE ACFT AND SMOKE HAD DISSIPATED IN COCKPIT SO I ELECTED TO TAXI TO THE GATE. NO OTHER PROBS NOTED. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: RPTR STATED, MAINT FOUND AN APU BEARING FAILURE. THE CREW SHUT DOWN THE APU AT 2000 FT. THIS ALLOWED A QUANTITY OF TURBINE OIL TO BE DUMPED INTO THE PNEUMATIC SYS. AS THE AIR WAS HEATED BY PASSING THROUGH THE PACKS, VISIBLE SMOKE AND ODOR RESULTED. MAINT 'BURNED OUT' THE PNEUMATIC SYS AND THE TRIP DEPARTED WITH AN INOP APU. THE CAPT WAS ESPECIALLY COMPLIMENTARY OF HANDLING BY THE YYZ TWR AND CFR PERSONNEL. THE TRIP LEFT ABOUT 1 HR LATE AND WAS UNEVENTFUL.
