Narrative:

Flying IFR in VMC in a C172 belonging to a club I recently joined, I inadvertently switched communications from #2 with approach to #1. I realized the error several mins later and checked back with approach. I was told to contact msn approach, who told me they had been looking for me. Contributing factors: new airplane (to me) and unfamiliar with audio panel operation. Lack of recent experience in IFR system -- rusty communication technique. Experimenting with autoplt with which I was unfamiliar -- attention diverted from radio operation.
