Narrative:
Departing gls on IFR plan, failed to enter proper transponder code. Called center to report airborne at approximately 1000 ft. Center did not respond. Called again, no response. On third call center acknowledged, asked me to identify. At that time I realized I was squawking 1200. I immediately put the appropriate squawk and control acknowledged. I was given a position report of another aircraft at 12 O'clock position and 1000 ft. The aircraft initially flew under me about 700 ft separation. Problem: delay in approach recognition because of squawk and poor radio reception could have result in a midair incident. Solution: better concentration to ensure proper squawk. Center radio not receiving below 1200 ft on departure previous approach. Tried to cancel IFR in air but received no acknowledgment, on approach to gls.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: PVT PLT OF A FLT IN A C182 DEPARTED AN UNCTLED ARPT ON AN IFR FLT EXPERIENCED DIFFICULTY CONTACTING CTR DEP CTL DUE TO NOT SQUAWKING THE XPONDER CODE GIVEN IN HIS CLRNC PRIOR TO TKOF.
Narrative: DEPARTING GLS ON IFR PLAN, FAILED TO ENTER PROPER XPONDER CODE. CALLED CTR TO RPT AIRBORNE AT APPROX 1000 FT. CTR DID NOT RESPOND. CALLED AGAIN, NO RESPONSE. ON THIRD CALL CTR ACKNOWLEDGED, ASKED ME TO IDENT. AT THAT TIME I REALIZED I WAS SQUAWKING 1200. I IMMEDIATELY PUT THE APPROPRIATE SQUAWK AND CTL ACKNOWLEDGED. I WAS GIVEN A POS RPT OF ANOTHER ACFT AT 12 O'CLOCK POS AND 1000 FT. THE ACFT INITIALLY FLEW UNDER ME ABOUT 700 FT SEPARATION. PROB: DELAY IN APCH RECOGNITION BECAUSE OF SQUAWK AND POOR RADIO RECEPTION COULD HAVE RESULT IN A MIDAIR INCIDENT. SOLUTION: BETTER CONCENTRATION TO ENSURE PROPER SQUAWK. CTR RADIO NOT RECEIVING BELOW 1200 FT ON DEP PREVIOUS APCH. TRIED TO CANCEL IFR IN AIR BUT RECEIVED NO ACKNOWLEDGMENT, ON APCH TO GLS.
