Narrative:
Near landing and shortly after being cleared to 3000 ft, engine stopped. My assessment was lack of fuel. I was told the aircraft had 4 hours usable and was basing my decision on that. I now believe that time was too generous. I landed the aircraft in stubble field away from people and property and had declared an emergency. Hobbs meter indicated 3.4 hours. Landing was made safely without damage to property or the aircraft. There were no injuries. The aircraft was inspected and then flown off the highway nearby. Police were there to assist and hold traffic.
