Narrative:

During climb out we were cleared by ZTL (frequency 127.3) from approximately 11000 ft to FL210. At approximately 15000-16000 ft, ZTL cleared us to FL280. As we climbed through FL195, ATC asked if we were level at FL180. I stated we were cleared to FL280 and ATC said to descend immediately to FL180. I feel ATC meant to give us FL180 but read FL280. I read back FL280 and set FL280 in the altitude alerter.

Title: FLC OF A CPR CESSNA CITATION III C650 OVERSHOT ALT DURING CLB DUE CLRNC INTERP. CAPT READ BACK HIGH ALT WITH NO ATC CONTRADICTION. HOWEVER, ARTCC RADAR CTLR STOPPED THEIR CLB EARLY AND SENT THEM BACK DOWN. CREW THOUGHT THAT THEY HEARD IT CORRECTLY AND SET THE ALT ALERTER ACCORDINGLY.

Narrative: DURING CLBOUT WE WERE CLRED BY ZTL (FREQ 127.3) FROM APPROX 11000 FT TO FL210. AT APPROX 15000-16000 FT, ZTL CLRED US TO FL280. AS WE CLBED THROUGH FL195, ATC ASKED IF WE WERE LEVEL AT FL180. I STATED WE WERE CLRED TO FL280 AND ATC SAID TO DSND IMMEDIATELY TO FL180. I FEEL ATC MEANT TO GIVE US FL180 BUT READ FL280. I READ BACK FL280 AND SET FL280 IN THE ALT ALERTER.
