Narrative:
I was notified by the #1 flight attendant during cruise 3.5 hours after takeoff that there was a prisoner on board with 2 escorts -- one of which was armed. The gate agent never informed me and did not give me an air carrier form xx. The flight attendant's paperwork was a connecting flight form since the prisoner and escorts had apparently connected from another flight. Flight manual states that prisoners will not be accepted on flts scheduled for more than 4 hours. Our flight was scheduled for 6.15. The flight attendant also informed me that the prisoner's handcuffs were removed during flight and the prisoner was allowed to visit the lavatory -- both of which are not allowed by the flight manual. I directed the #1 flight attendant to brief the escorts to keep the prisoner handcuffed and seated. The escorts complied. The prisoner and escorts were seated in XXX, xxy and xxz.
