Narrative:

On descent to landing to gas, there was a C172 flying traffic patterns. The C172 was on crosswind when I entered behind him, crossing the end of the airfield. Since the airfield lies in a valley, I did not have a good view of the runway until I was very close to it. I did not hear a cessna citation announce his takeoff and as a result there was a near miss on the extended centerline of the runway. I was trying to slow down and enter the traffic pattern behind the C172. The pilot of the citation should have announced his takeoff and I should have viewed the runway more cautiously.
