Narrative:
While on a visual approach to stl at 10-12 mi out on the ILS to runway 12R at stl, TCASII reported traffic at our 1 O'clock position and lower than us. The TCASII reported the traffic was at 300 ft lower than our position. We then picked up the traffic visually and avoided conflict as he passed under our nose on a north heading. The traffic appeared to be a low wing single engine reciprocating aircraft. We then reported the traffic to stl tower because we had just switched to tower frequency. I believe the aircraft had strayed into the stl class B, probably with a bad transponder.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: WHILE ON APCH AT STL, AN LTT ACFT HAS AN SMA INTRUDE INTO HIS AREA CAUSING A TCASII ALERT. FLC SUSPECTS SMA WAS SIMPLY AN INTRUDER.
Narrative: WHILE ON A VISUAL APCH TO STL AT 10-12 MI OUT ON THE ILS TO RWY 12R AT STL, TCASII RPTED TFC AT OUR 1 O'CLOCK POS AND LOWER THAN US. THE TCASII RPTED THE TFC WAS AT 300 FT LOWER THAN OUR POS. WE THEN PICKED UP THE TFC VISUALLY AND AVOIDED CONFLICT AS HE PASSED UNDER OUR NOSE ON A N HDG. THE TFC APPEARED TO BE A LOW WING SINGLE ENG RECIPROCATING ACFT. WE THEN RPTED THE TFC TO STL TWR BECAUSE WE HAD JUST SWITCHED TO TWR FREQ. I BELIEVE THE ACFT HAD STRAYED INTO THE STL CLASS B, PROBABLY WITH A BAD XPONDER.
