Narrative:
At cruise, FL370, received 'right engine oil filter' message. Followed company abnormal checklists and with coordination with company flight control, reduced the right engine to idle power and kept it there for the rest of the flight. Normal descent, approach and landing to runway 2C in bna. ATC cooperated fully with requests for routing direct to outer marker to runway 2C. An emergency was not declared. No further problems. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: the reporter stated the filter bypass light came on and company procedure was followed by reducing the right engine power to idle. The reporter said the air carrier mechanics sent to bna found the right oil screen filled with metal and on checking with maintenance control were advised this was a newly overhauled engine. The reporter said the oil screen was replaced and the engine run at high power for 20 mins, the screen was again removed and checked clean. The reporter stated the metal was from the machining process during engine buildup.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A B757-200 IN CRUISE AT FL370 EXPERIENCED THE OIL FILTER BYPASS LIGHT ILLUMINATE ON THE R ENG AND REDUCED PWR TO FLT IDLE. LIGHT ILLUMINATION CAUSED BY THE OIL SCREEN CONTAMINATED WITH RESIDUAL METAL FROM THE OVERHAUL MACHINING PROCESS.
Narrative: AT CRUISE, FL370, RECEIVED 'R ENG OIL FILTER' MESSAGE. FOLLOWED COMPANY ABNORMAL CHKLISTS AND WITH COORD WITH COMPANY FLT CTL, REDUCED THE R ENG TO IDLE PWR AND KEPT IT THERE FOR THE REST OF THE FLT. NORMAL DSCNT, APCH AND LNDG TO RWY 2C IN BNA. ATC COOPERATED FULLY WITH REQUESTS FOR ROUTING DIRECT TO OUTER MARKER TO RWY 2C. AN EMER WAS NOT DECLARED. NO FURTHER PROBS. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: THE RPTR STATED THE FILTER BYPASS LIGHT CAME ON AND COMPANY PROC WAS FOLLOWED BY REDUCING THE R ENG PWR TO IDLE. THE RPTR SAID THE ACR MECHS SENT TO BNA FOUND THE R OIL SCREEN FILLED WITH METAL AND ON CHKING WITH MAINT CTL WERE ADVISED THIS WAS A NEWLY OVERHAULED ENG. THE RPTR SAID THE OIL SCREEN WAS REPLACED AND THE ENG RUN AT HIGH PWR FOR 20 MINS, THE SCREEN WAS AGAIN REMOVED AND CHKED CLEAN. THE RPTR STATED THE METAL WAS FROM THE MACHINING PROCESS DURING ENG BUILDUP.
