Narrative:
Final approach was being overshot (runway 18). When noted on ILS (backup) a right turn was initiated to correct to proper course. As turn was initiated, TCASII displayed traffic at 11 O'clock, just inside 2 mi, 300 ft above us. Almost simultaneously, tower called a cherokee at 11 or 12 O'clock and told us to tighten up the turn. Traffic was never see, TCASII gave the proper commands and conflict was avoided. Landing was completed. First officer was flying visual pattern with right base. Aside: runway under construction is much more visible than old runways and initially draws your attention.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: FO OF A B727-200 OVERSHOT FINAL DURING A VISUAL APCH RESULTING IN TCASII RA. TWR CTLR ALSO ISSUED A TA OF A PIPER CHEROKEE JUST AHEAD ON FINAL TO ANOTHER RWY AND THAT THEY WERE LINED UP WITH THE WRONG RWY. FO STEEPENED HIS TURN AND DSNDED MORE RAPIDLY IN TAKING EVASIVE ACTION AND TO LINE UP WITH THE ASSIGNED RWY.
Narrative: FINAL APCH WAS BEING OVERSHOT (RWY 18). WHEN NOTED ON ILS (BACKUP) A R TURN WAS INITIATED TO CORRECT TO PROPER COURSE. AS TURN WAS INITIATED, TCASII DISPLAYED TFC AT 11 O'CLOCK, JUST INSIDE 2 MI, 300 FT ABOVE US. ALMOST SIMULTANEOUSLY, TWR CALLED A CHEROKEE AT 11 OR 12 O'CLOCK AND TOLD US TO TIGHTEN UP THE TURN. TFC WAS NEVER SEE, TCASII GAVE THE PROPER COMMANDS AND CONFLICT WAS AVOIDED. LNDG WAS COMPLETED. FO WAS FLYING VISUAL PATTERN WITH R BASE. ASIDE: RWY UNDER CONSTRUCTION IS MUCH MORE VISIBLE THAN OLD RWYS AND INITIALLY DRAWS YOUR ATTN.
