Narrative:
Told the tower I was 10 mi southeast of the field. Tower instructed me to circumnav the field to the south and report a 2 mi right downwind for runway 16R. Tower asked me where I was at and I stated that I was 2 mi south of the field, when another aircraft on the upwind reported that I was close to 500 ft from hitting them. Tower could have given me a left downwind for the same runway instead of me circumnaving across the upwind traffic. I never saw the upwind traffic and tower never gave information about the other aircraft.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A VFR ACFT SE OF ARPT WAS INSTRUCTED TO CIRCUMNAV S OF THE ARPT AND ENTER R DOWNWIND FOR RWY 16R. THE RPTR PLT CROSSED 2 MI S OF THE ARPT AT 1200 FT AND WAS INVOLVED IN AN NMAC WITH ANOTHER ACFT OFF THE DEP END OF THE RWY.
Narrative: TOLD THE TWR I WAS 10 MI SE OF THE FIELD. TWR INSTRUCTED ME TO CIRCUMNAV THE FIELD TO THE S AND RPT A 2 MI R DOWNWIND FOR RWY 16R. TWR ASKED ME WHERE I WAS AT AND I STATED THAT I WAS 2 MI S OF THE FIELD, WHEN ANOTHER ACFT ON THE UPWIND RPTED THAT I WAS CLOSE TO 500 FT FROM HITTING THEM. TWR COULD HAVE GIVEN ME A L DOWNWIND FOR THE SAME RWY INSTEAD OF ME CIRCUMNAVING ACROSS THE UPWIND TFC. I NEVER SAW THE UPWIND TFC AND TWR NEVER GAVE INFO ABOUT THE OTHER ACFT.
