Narrative:
We were ferrying aircraft to next departure station after repairs to transponder/altitude reporting. (IOE for first officer (second day) who was flying.) autoplt engaged and set to level at 8000 ft assigned. Just before 8000 ft the ADI (altitude instrument) on my side failed. System indicated pitch and roll mismatch between ahrs system and autoplt disengaged. First officer began flying manually. I scanned both panels and the stand-by attitude indicator to insure we were under control. The new first officer was not aggressive enough in assuming pitch control and when I looked back to my panel, we were climbing above 8000 ft. I called out 'check your altitude, we're climbing.' he began correcting and we touched 8300 ft and started back down. At that moment the approach controller called to check our altitude. I reported we were coming back to level at 8000 ft and subsequently reported that we experienced an attitude indicator and autoplt malfunction. He turned us over to center (ZBW) and after brief discussion with company, we elected to return to binghamton for further repairs.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: FLC OF A DEHAVILLAND DASH 8 (DH8), CLBED ABOVE ASSIGNED ALT DURING DEP DUE TO THE FAILURE OF THE CAPT'S ATTITUDE INST CAUSING THE AUTOPLT TO DISCONNECT. THE CAPT NOTICED THE CLB AT THE SAME TIME THAT DEP CTLR INTERVENED TO REMIND THEM OF THEIR ASSIGNED ALT. THE FO RETURNED THE ACFT MANUALLY TO ASSIGNED ALT AND DEP ARPT.
Narrative: WE WERE FERRYING ACFT TO NEXT DEP STATION AFTER REPAIRS TO XPONDER/ALT RPTING. (IOE FOR FO (SECOND DAY) WHO WAS FLYING.) AUTOPLT ENGAGED AND SET TO LEVEL AT 8000 FT ASSIGNED. JUST BEFORE 8000 FT THE ADI (ALT INST) ON MY SIDE FAILED. SYS INDICATED PITCH AND ROLL MISMATCH BTWN AHRS SYS AND AUTOPLT DISENGAGED. FO BEGAN FLYING MANUALLY. I SCANNED BOTH PANELS AND THE STAND-BY ATTITUDE INDICATOR TO INSURE WE WERE UNDER CTL. THE NEW FO WAS NOT AGGRESSIVE ENOUGH IN ASSUMING PITCH CTL AND WHEN I LOOKED BACK TO MY PANEL, WE WERE CLBING ABOVE 8000 FT. I CALLED OUT 'CHK YOUR ALT, WE'RE CLBING.' HE BEGAN CORRECTING AND WE TOUCHED 8300 FT AND STARTED BACK DOWN. AT THAT MOMENT THE APCH CTLR CALLED TO CHK OUR ALT. I RPTED WE WERE COMING BACK TO LEVEL AT 8000 FT AND SUBSEQUENTLY RPTED THAT WE EXPERIENCED AN ATTITUDE INDICATOR AND AUTOPLT MALFUNCTION. HE TURNED US OVER TO CTR (ZBW) AND AFTER BRIEF DISCUSSION WITH COMPANY, WE ELECTED TO RETURN TO BINGHAMTON FOR FURTHER REPAIRS.
