Narrative:

We were on base for runway 26R in atl, heading 180 degrees, speed 180 KTS, altitude 4500 ft MSL. As we were about to cross the runway centerline, we asked the approach controller for a turn to final. He asked us where we had been. He then asked if we had runway 27L in sight. We confirmed that we had runway 27L in sight and were subsequently cleared for the visual approach. We immediately recognized an intermittent failure of communication #1 VHF radio. We switched to communication #2 radio. The remainder of the approach and landing were uneventful.
