Controller cleared us to FL290 and to expect FL310. Crew understood as cleared to FL310. Discovered error passing FL294 and descended back to FL290. No apparent conflict existed. Supplemental information from acn 415077: as we went through FL295, ATC advised us of our clearance limit of FL290.

Narrative: CTLR CLRED US TO FL290 AND TO EXPECT FL310. CREW UNDERSTOOD AS CLRED TO FL310. DISCOVERED ERROR PASSING FL294 AND DSNDED BACK TO FL290. NO APPARENT CONFLICT EXISTED. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 415077: AS WE WENT THROUGH FL295, ATC ADVISED US OF OUR CLRNC LIMIT OF FL290.
