Narrative:
On oct/xa/98 about XA00, while on a flight from cvg to ptk, cruising at 9000 ft, ATC cleared us to descend. I was getting various ATIS around ptk, and the captain was flying and put 6000 ft in the altitude reminder. Another aircraft passed below us and asked ATC to check to see if we had the correct altimeter setting. ATC asked us for our altitude. We were level at 6000 ft. She did not say anything else about it, that we were supposed to be at some other altitude -- nothing. We figured she had missed reporting out the traffic to us. Neither us nor the other aircraft took evasive action, and our flight proceeded normally to ptk. We should have queried ATC about the traffic's altitude when we saw it. ATC should have pointed out the traffic to us.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: NMAC BTWN A CONVAIR 580 IN CRUISE AFTER DSCNT IN TO TERMINAL AREA AND A LIGHT TWIN PASSING WITHIN 300 FT. THE TWIN PLT COMMENTED TO APCH CTLR THAT HE WONDERED IF THE CONVAIR HAD THE CORRECT ALTIMETER SETTING TO WHICH THE CTLR QUESTIONED THE ALT OF THE CONVAIR. CTLR DID NOT MENTION IF EITHER ACFT WAS NOT AT ASSIGNED ALT.
Narrative: ON OCT/XA/98 ABOUT XA00, WHILE ON A FLT FROM CVG TO PTK, CRUISING AT 9000 FT, ATC CLRED US TO DSND. I WAS GETTING VARIOUS ATIS AROUND PTK, AND THE CAPT WAS FLYING AND PUT 6000 FT IN THE ALT REMINDER. ANOTHER ACFT PASSED BELOW US AND ASKED ATC TO CHK TO SEE IF WE HAD THE CORRECT ALTIMETER SETTING. ATC ASKED US FOR OUR ALT. WE WERE LEVEL AT 6000 FT. SHE DID NOT SAY ANYTHING ELSE ABOUT IT, THAT WE WERE SUPPOSED TO BE AT SOME OTHER ALT -- NOTHING. WE FIGURED SHE HAD MISSED RPTING OUT THE TFC TO US. NEITHER US NOR THE OTHER ACFT TOOK EVASIVE ACTION, AND OUR FLT PROCEEDED NORMALLY TO PTK. WE SHOULD HAVE QUERIED ATC ABOUT THE TFC'S ALT WHEN WE SAW IT. ATC SHOULD HAVE POINTED OUT THE TFC TO US.
