Narrative:
I contacted ZZZ tower 6 mi west for landing at ZZZ. Tower unsure where that was located (southwest corner of field). Tower told me of traffic departing runway 22, right turnout, wbound. Tower also told me landing area not visible from the tower, landing at pilot's own risk. I told tower I had the traffic and I was below, to their right. I then looked to my left front and saw departing traffic, low and to the left. That traffic wanted to know where I had come from and asked to report a near miss. This aircraft had departed runway 22R and there was additional traffic departing runway 22L. The tower controller seemed unsure of our desired landing area and did not advise us of the traffic departing runway 22R&left. (We have been operating from this location for several yrs.) calling on the departing twin engine traffic caused us to focus our attention in only one direction. Due to the time of day and my approach from the west, I was probably hard to see when looking toward the sun.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A ROTARY WINGED ACFT ENCOUNTERS DEP TFC OFF RWYS 22L AND 22R WHILE MAKING A STRAIGHT IN TO THE ARPT FROM THE W.
Narrative: I CONTACTED ZZZ TWR 6 MI W FOR LNDG AT ZZZ. TWR UNSURE WHERE THAT WAS LOCATED (SW CORNER OF FIELD). TWR TOLD ME OF TFC DEPARTING RWY 22, R TURNOUT, WBOUND. TWR ALSO TOLD ME LNDG AREA NOT VISIBLE FROM THE TWR, LNDG AT PLT'S OWN RISK. I TOLD TWR I HAD THE TFC AND I WAS BELOW, TO THEIR R. I THEN LOOKED TO MY L FRONT AND SAW DEPARTING TFC, LOW AND TO THE L. THAT TFC WANTED TO KNOW WHERE I HAD COME FROM AND ASKED TO RPT A NEAR MISS. THIS ACFT HAD DEPARTED RWY 22R AND THERE WAS ADDITIONAL TFC DEPARTING RWY 22L. THE TWR CTLR SEEMED UNSURE OF OUR DESIRED LNDG AREA AND DID NOT ADVISE US OF THE TFC DEPARTING RWY 22R&L. (WE HAVE BEEN OPERATING FROM THIS LOCATION FOR SEVERAL YRS.) CALLING ON THE DEPARTING TWIN ENG TFC CAUSED US TO FOCUS OUR ATTN IN ONLY ONE DIRECTION. DUE TO THE TIME OF DAY AND MY APCH FROM THE W, I WAS PROBABLY HARD TO SEE WHEN LOOKING TOWARD THE SUN.
