Narrative:

After gear retraction, the left main gear unsafe light remained illuminated. Appropriate abnormal checklist accomplished with no affect. Dispatch and maintenance control were notified and return to mem was coordinated. Emergency equipment was requested to stand by. Landing and taxi to gate was uneventful. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: the reporter stated the direct cause of the warning was unknown because a plane change was made and the crew departed before maintenance worked the aircraft. The reporter said it was a gear position indication problem because the landing gear operated ok.

Title: A DC9-50 ACFT ON INITIAL CLB DECLARED AN EMER AND DIVERTED DUE TO THE L MAIN LNDG GEAR UNSAFE LIGHT ILLUMINATED WITH THE GEAR HANDLE UP.

Narrative: AFTER GEAR RETRACTION, THE L MAIN GEAR UNSAFE LIGHT REMAINED ILLUMINATED. APPROPRIATE ABNORMAL CHKLIST ACCOMPLISHED WITH NO AFFECT. DISPATCH AND MAINT CTL WERE NOTIFIED AND RETURN TO MEM WAS COORDINATED. EMER EQUIP WAS REQUESTED TO STAND BY. LNDG AND TAXI TO GATE WAS UNEVENTFUL. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: THE RPTR STATED THE DIRECT CAUSE OF THE WARNING WAS UNKNOWN BECAUSE A PLANE CHANGE WAS MADE AND THE CREW DEPARTED BEFORE MAINT WORKED THE ACFT. THE RPTR SAID IT WAS A GEAR POS INDICATION PROB BECAUSE THE LNDG GEAR OPERATED OK.
