Narrative:
Noted target at 1-2 O'clock on the TCASII during our climb. Traffic converging and pacing our clt rate. At first thought it was a 'ghost.' ATC then chimed in with a TA. The target went from a TA to an RA very rapidly and almost simultaneously ATC issued an immediate climb. The RA activated indicating a descent. Not having the target in sight, we followed the RA instructions. ATC also issued a turn to the east, away from the target. We stopped our descent at 11000 ft when the TCASII indicated clear of conflict. Never able to acquire target visually. Target continued on its course and we returned to our clearance shortly thereafter.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: DURING DEP CLB, THE FLC OF AN SAAB SF340 DSNDED IN RESPONSE TO A TCASII RA AS WELL AS TURNED IN COMPLIANCE WITH DEP CTLR'S INSTRUCTIONS. UNKNOWN TFC APPEARED FAST APCHING CAUSING BOTH ATC AND TCASII TO ISSUE RESOLUTION INSTRUCTIONS.
Narrative: NOTED TARGET AT 1-2 O'CLOCK ON THE TCASII DURING OUR CLB. TFC CONVERGING AND PACING OUR CLT RATE. AT FIRST THOUGHT IT WAS A 'GHOST.' ATC THEN CHIMED IN WITH A TA. THE TARGET WENT FROM A TA TO AN RA VERY RAPIDLY AND ALMOST SIMULTANEOUSLY ATC ISSUED AN IMMEDIATE CLB. THE RA ACTIVATED INDICATING A DSCNT. NOT HAVING THE TARGET IN SIGHT, WE FOLLOWED THE RA INSTRUCTIONS. ATC ALSO ISSUED A TURN TO THE E, AWAY FROM THE TARGET. WE STOPPED OUR DSCNT AT 11000 FT WHEN THE TCASII INDICATED CLR OF CONFLICT. NEVER ABLE TO ACQUIRE TARGET VISUALLY. TARGET CONTINUED ON ITS COURSE AND WE RETURNED TO OUR CLRNC SHORTLY THEREAFTER.
