Narrative:
After taking off from runway 4R at bos, simultaneous with gear retraction, we heard a 'bang' and experienced total right engine failure. The captain declared an emergency and we were vectored back for a landing. After intercepting the GS for runway 33L, we lowered the landing gear. The main gear came down but not the nose gear. We flew by the tower to have then check the status of our nose gear. Approximately midfield the nose gear locked down and the tower confirmed this. We were vectored back for a successful landing. We shut the aircraft down on the runway to be inspected by the crash fire rescue equipment crew. The gear was pinned and we were towed to the gate. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: the reporter stated the only information maintenance forwarded was the engine was changed due to hot section component failure.

Title: AN MD88 ON TKOF AT 50 FT AGL DECLARED AN EMER AND DIVERTED DUE TO #2 ENG LOSS OF PWR CAUSED BY TURBINE ASSEMBLY COMPONENT FAILURE.
Narrative: AFTER TAKING OFF FROM RWY 4R AT BOS, SIMULTANEOUS WITH GEAR RETRACTION, WE HEARD A 'BANG' AND EXPERIENCED TOTAL R ENG FAILURE. THE CAPT DECLARED AN EMER AND WE WERE VECTORED BACK FOR A LNDG. AFTER INTERCEPTING THE GS FOR RWY 33L, WE LOWERED THE LNDG GEAR. THE MAIN GEAR CAME DOWN BUT NOT THE NOSE GEAR. WE FLEW BY THE TWR TO HAVE THEN CHK THE STATUS OF OUR NOSE GEAR. APPROX MIDFIELD THE NOSE GEAR LOCKED DOWN AND THE TWR CONFIRMED THIS. WE WERE VECTORED BACK FOR A SUCCESSFUL LNDG. WE SHUT THE ACFT DOWN ON THE RWY TO BE INSPECTED BY THE CFR CREW. THE GEAR WAS PINNED AND WE WERE TOWED TO THE GATE. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: THE RPTR STATED THE ONLY INFO MAINT FORWARDED WAS THE ENG WAS CHANGED DUE TO HOT SECTION COMPONENT FAILURE.
