Narrative:
Long duty day. Had deadheaded to mco from lax to fly right back after landing. We were held between the runways. After a period of time, got clearance to cross runway and contact ground. Ground asked which gate we had, and we responded with the gate number. At that time, there were 2 aircraft in our alley. Ground asked if our ramp control wanted for us to wait for both aircraft to exit or after the first one. The first officer contacted our ramp control, who indicated that the second aircraft would hold for us. Thinking that we had clearance to the gate, I proceeded in. We were unable to contact ground because of congestion on the frequency. That's when ground asked 'why' we were taxiing. In fact, we never got a 'hold position' or 'hold at intersection' from ground. My better knowledge should have told me to hold position until we got clearance from ground. The big thing was that there is another taxiway that we had to cross that taxiing aircraft use and were using. Ground control should have given a 'hold position.'
