Narrative:
We were flying air carrier X flight lga to btv on oct/xa/98 in day VMC 30 NM south of cambridge VOR at 15000 ft MSL with ZBW on 128.1. We were informed of air carrier Y MD80 traffic at 2 O'clock wbound at 16000 ft MSL and 15 NM. We advised we saw traffic, upon which ZBW told us to maintain visual separation and climb to 17000 ft MSL. With the MD80 in sight, we climbed to 17000 ft. The MD80 appeared to be closing fast on us but not a conflict. At 15800 ft MSL the TCASII sounded off with several RA commands. The air carrier Y MD80 remained in sight -- was close aboard -- distance unknown. We cleared traffic to 17000 ft without a problem or incident. ZBW asked us if we had a problem and if we were able to maintain visual contact. They asked air carrier Y the same question. Air carrier X and air carrier Y responded with having continuous visual separation and no conflict.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: ARTCC RADAR CTLR PROVIDED TA TO THE RPTING FLC OF A DH8 AT 15000 FT AND TO AN MD80 LEVEL AT 16000 FT. CTLR ASKED IF EACH ACFT HAD THE OTHER IN SIGHT AND FOR THEM TO MAINTAIN VISUAL SEPARATION. CTLR THEN REQUESTED THE DH8 CREW TO CLB TO 17000 FT AND MAINTAIN VISUAL SEPARATION. BOTH FLCS KEPT THE OTHER IN SIGHT, HOWEVER, EACH CREW WAS GIVEN WARNING COMMANDS BY THEIR RESPECTIVE TCASII EQUIP WHEN APCHING THE OTHER.
Narrative: WE WERE FLYING ACR X FLT LGA TO BTV ON OCT/XA/98 IN DAY VMC 30 NM S OF CAMBRIDGE VOR AT 15000 FT MSL WITH ZBW ON 128.1. WITH THE MD80 IN SIGHT, WE CLBED TO 17000 FT. THE MD80 APPEARED TO BE CLOSING FAST ON US BUT NOT A CONFLICT. AT 15800 FT MSL THE TCASII SOUNDED OFF WITH SEVERAL RA COMMANDS. THE ACR Y MD80 REMAINED IN SIGHT -- WAS CLOSE ABOARD -- DISTANCE UNKNOWN. WE CLRED TFC TO 17000 FT WITHOUT A PROB OR INCIDENT. ZBW ASKED US IF WE HAD A PROB AND IF WE WERE ABLE TO MAINTAIN VISUAL CONTACT. THEY ASKED ACR Y THE SAME QUESTION. ACR X AND ACR Y RESPONDED WITH HAVING CONTINUOUS VISUAL SEPARATION AND NO CONFLICT.
