Cleared to FL230. Altitude alerter was not working and I overshot to FL235 and quickly corrected. No other aircraft in area. Nothing said by ZOB.

Title: FO OF A DC9 OVERSHOT ASSIGNED ALT DURING CLB. FO MADE A CORRECTION BACK AT ONCE AND NOTHING WAS SAID BY ATC. THE FO BLAMES HIS INOP ALT ALERT SYS FOR THE MISTAKE.
Narrative: CLRED TO FL230. ALT ALERTER WAS NOT WORKING AND I OVERSHOT TO FL235 AND QUICKLY CORRECTED. NO OTHER ACFT IN AREA. NOTHING SAID BY ZOB.
