Narrative:
On approach to jax, cleared to land on runway 13, but aligned for runway 7 for a right base to runway 13. We were following military traffic approximately 3 mi ahead with xyz B737 immediately behind us. We had a tailwind at 1000 ft which we did not know about, since aircraft did not have wind readout. Prior to right turn to final, we focused on vehicular traffic near the runway. Due to focusing on the traffic, we inadvertently delayed our turn to final and overshot centerline to runway 13. We used about 20-25 degrees angle of bank to return to centerline. After re- establishing position on centerline, we encountered a large drift left to right, at low altitude. We elected to go around and touched down on the go around. Winds at surface level 050 degrees at 8 KTS. Winds at 1000 ft approximately 360 degrees at 20 KTS (as relayed by trailing aircraft). Factors causing this aborted landing: 1) delayed turn to final because of focusing on vehicular traffic near runway. 2) tight turn requested. 3) unknown winds at altitude.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: AT JAX, BECAUSE OF A STRONG LOW LEVEL WIND AND ATTN DIVERTED TO A GND VEHICLE, FLC MADE A GAR. THEY OVERFLEW THE CTRLINE AND HAD TO BANK SHARPLY TO REGAIN CTRLINE.
Narrative: ON APCH TO JAX, CLRED TO LAND ON RWY 13, BUT ALIGNED FOR RWY 7 FOR A R BASE TO RWY 13. WE WERE FOLLOWING MIL TFC APPROX 3 MI AHEAD WITH XYZ B737 IMMEDIATELY BEHIND US. WE HAD A TAILWIND AT 1000 FT WHICH WE DID NOT KNOW ABOUT, SINCE ACFT DID NOT HAVE WIND READOUT. PRIOR TO R TURN TO FINAL, WE FOCUSED ON VEHICULAR TFC NEAR THE RWY. DUE TO FOCUSING ON THE TFC, WE INADVERTENTLY DELAYED OUR TURN TO FINAL AND OVERSHOT CTRLINE TO RWY 13. WE USED ABOUT 20-25 DEGS ANGLE OF BANK TO RETURN TO CTRLINE. AFTER RE- ESTABLISHING POS ON CTRLINE, WE ENCOUNTERED A LARGE DRIFT L TO R, AT LOW ALT. WE ELECTED TO GO AROUND AND TOUCHED DOWN ON THE GAR. WINDS AT SURFACE LEVEL 050 DEGS AT 8 KTS. WINDS AT 1000 FT APPROX 360 DEGS AT 20 KTS (AS RELAYED BY TRAILING ACFT). FACTORS CAUSING THIS ABORTED LNDG: 1) DELAYED TURN TO FINAL BECAUSE OF FOCUSING ON VEHICULAR TFC NEAR RWY. 2) TIGHT TURN REQUESTED. 3) UNKNOWN WINDS AT ALT.
