Narrative:
Loss of power resulting in forced landing on highway. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: the reporter stated the engine failure was caused by fuel starvation even though the fuel quantity indicators were indicating adequate fuel remaining. The reporter said the FAA has cited the FBO who rented the aircraft for failure to maintain the fuel quantity indicators properly. The reporter stated the reporter did not visually verify the fuel actually in the tanks prior to flight but relied on the indicator's accuracy. There were no injuries or damage to the aircraft.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A C152 IN CRUISE AT 2200 FT EXPERIENCED LOSS OF PWR CAUSED BY FUEL STARVATION AND MADE AN OFF ARPT LNDG ON A HWY.
Narrative: LOSS OF PWR RESULTING IN FORCED LNDG ON HWY. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: THE RPTR STATED THE ENG FAILURE WAS CAUSED BY FUEL STARVATION EVEN THOUGH THE FUEL QUANTITY INDICATORS WERE INDICATING ADEQUATE FUEL REMAINING. THE RPTR SAID THE FAA HAS CITED THE FBO WHO RENTED THE ACFT FOR FAILURE TO MAINTAIN THE FUEL QUANTITY INDICATORS PROPERLY. THE RPTR STATED THE RPTR DID NOT VISUALLY VERIFY THE FUEL ACTUALLY IN THE TANKS PRIOR TO FLT BUT RELIED ON THE INDICATOR'S ACCURACY. THERE WERE NO INJURIES OR DAMAGE TO THE ACFT.
