Narrative:
Passing through 12000 ft on heatt arrival we heard what sounded like 'air carrier xab turn right heading 240 degrees.' there was a slight pause, followed by 'no, air carrier xab that was for air carrier yab.' we returned to our original heading with no apparent loss of separation. I feel that air carrier X and air carrier Y should fix the problem of very similar call signs.

Title: B757 ACFT CREW WITH SIMILAR CALL SIGN RESPONDED ERRONEOUSLY TO CTLR ASSIGNED HDG CHANGE.
Narrative: PASSING THROUGH 12000 FT ON HEATT ARR WE HEARD WHAT SOUNDED LIKE 'ACR XAB TURN R HDG 240 DEGS.' THERE WAS A SLIGHT PAUSE, FOLLOWED BY 'NO, ACR XAB THAT WAS FOR ACR YAB.' WE RETURNED TO OUR ORIGINAL HDG WITH NO APPARENT LOSS OF SEPARATION. I FEEL THAT ACR X AND ACR Y SHOULD FIX THE PROB OF VERY SIMILAR CALL SIGNS.
