Narrative:

We landed lax on runway 24R. Entering the 'aa' high speed taxiway, the tower cleared us to 'cross runway 24L and contact ground control on the other side,' which we acknowledged. We continued on the high speed taxiway aa and looked left to clear for traffic. All lights were on (landing, turnoff, taxi). When the nose of the aircraft was at the runway edge, the tower instructed us to hold short. I immediately stopped the aircraft but the nose was by now about 10 ft onto the runway. We responded that we could not hold short, and that our nose was on the runway. A B737 was allowed to land on runway 24L and turned off at midfield (2000-3000 ft short of our position). The tower supervisor was called to discuss the incident, and was open to the recommendation of a timely clearance to hold short, so this would not happen again.
