Narrative:
I was on a pleasure flight from ocala, fl (ocf) to the vicinity of crystal river, fl. The bearing is approximately 230 degrees directly over dunnellon, fl (X35) airport which has an aerobatic box now. I have flown that route many times (before the box was established). I had heard it was there, but this day it simply flat out slipped my mind. 5 mi short of X35 airport, I called traffic on 122.8 (which was overworked as usual) to advise that I was crossing the field from northeast to southwest at 1500 ft MSL. When I was over the field, I heard someone say he was 6 or 7 mi northeast landing on runway 23. I told him I was continuing southwest and would not be a problem. Returning to ocala, I came back across X35 on a heading of 050 degrees and advised that I was crossing at 1700 ft MSL. 122.8 was so bad that I had to get a word in when I could, and somebody's microphone was making a lot of noise. My passenger asked me if it was that way all the time. I saw no aircraft in the air at X35 either going or returning. I am told the box will be discontinued as of dec/31/98.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: PLT OF A C182 FORGOT THAT THERE WAS AN AEROBATIC BOX OVER AN UNCTLED ARPT ON HIS RTE OF FLT AND FLEW OVER THE TOP OF THE ARPT AFTER ANNOUNCING HIS INTENTIONS. THE ARPT UNICOM DID NOT ADVISE OF ANY AEROBATIC ACTIVITY AND EVEN THOUGH THE FREQ WAS HARD TO HEAR, THERE WAS NO INDICATION THAT THE RPTR INTERFERED WITH ANY OTHER TFC.
Narrative: I WAS ON A PLEASURE FLT FROM OCALA, FL (OCF) TO THE VICINITY OF CRYSTAL RIVER, FL. THE BEARING IS APPROX 230 DEGS DIRECTLY OVER DUNNELLON, FL (X35) ARPT WHICH HAS AN AEROBATIC BOX NOW. I HAVE FLOWN THAT RTE MANY TIMES (BEFORE THE BOX WAS ESTABLISHED). I HAD HEARD IT WAS THERE, BUT THIS DAY IT SIMPLY FLAT OUT SLIPPED MY MIND. 5 MI SHORT OF X35 ARPT, I CALLED TFC ON 122.8 (WHICH WAS OVERWORKED AS USUAL) TO ADVISE THAT I WAS XING THE FIELD FROM NE TO SW AT 1500 FT MSL. WHEN I WAS OVER THE FIELD, I HEARD SOMEONE SAY HE WAS 6 OR 7 MI NE LNDG ON RWY 23. I TOLD HIM I WAS CONTINUING SW AND WOULD NOT BE A PROB. RETURNING TO OCALA, I CAME BACK ACROSS X35 ON A HDG OF 050 DEGS AND ADVISED THAT I WAS XING AT 1700 FT MSL. 122.8 WAS SO BAD THAT I HAD TO GET A WORD IN WHEN I COULD, AND SOMEBODY'S MIKE WAS MAKING A LOT OF NOISE. MY PAX ASKED ME IF IT WAS THAT WAY ALL THE TIME. I SAW NO ACFT IN THE AIR AT X35 EITHER GOING OR RETURNING. I AM TOLD THE BOX WILL BE DISCONTINUED AS OF DEC/31/98.
