Narrative:

Departure from ont had to do maximum power takeoff (30 day limit about to expire -- advised ACARS). Aircraft very light (260000 pounds). I (captain) was hand-flying prado 5. Departure said to level at 7000 ft. First officer had neglected to select reduced (climb) power as called for with after takeoff checklist. Through 6300 ft, I lowered nose to level at 7000 ft. I saw airspeed increasing rapidly. I saw that with altitude capture, autothrottles remained in EPR mode instead of changing to speed. I disconnected autothrottles, reduced thrust to idle, and pitched over to level. However, did not level till 7300 ft. Descended to 7000 ft then. Departure said nothing about my altitude deviation.

Title: B767 CREW HAD ALT EXCURSION AT FIRST INTERMEDIATE LEVELOFF ALT AT ONT.

Narrative: DEP FROM ONT HAD TO DO MAX PWR TKOF (30 DAY LIMIT ABOUT TO EXPIRE -- ADVISED ACARS). ACFT VERY LIGHT (260000 LBS). I (CAPT) WAS HAND-FLYING PRADO 5. DEP SAID TO LEVEL AT 7000 FT. FO HAD NEGLECTED TO SELECT REDUCED (CLB) PWR AS CALLED FOR WITH AFTER TKOF CHKLIST. THROUGH 6300 FT, I LOWERED NOSE TO LEVEL AT 7000 FT. I SAW AIRSPD INCREASING RAPIDLY. I SAW THAT WITH ALT CAPTURE, AUTOTHROTTLES REMAINED IN EPR MODE INSTEAD OF CHANGING TO SPD. I DISCONNECTED AUTOTHROTTLES, REDUCED THRUST TO IDLE, AND PITCHED OVER TO LEVEL. HOWEVER, DID NOT LEVEL TILL 7300 FT. DSNDED TO 7000 FT THEN. DEP SAID NOTHING ABOUT MY ALTDEV.
