Narrative:
While being radar vectored by pdx approach, approach issued a descent clearance to 6000 ft MSL. After calling out of 7000 ft, at 6800 ft the GPWS activated informing us of 'terrain, pull up.' I immediately started a climb to 8000 ft. The GPWS went silent at 7500 ft. I informed approach of the climb and the reason, and they commented that the MVA was 6000 ft. A few moments later, we accepted a descent to 3000 ft. The ILS approach continued without further incident.

Title: CAPT OF AN MD80 STOPPED DSNDING DURING VECTORS FOR APCH DUE TO A GPWS WARNING. ATC ADVISED THAT THE ACFT WAS WELL WITHIN MVA.
Narrative: WHILE BEING RADAR VECTORED BY PDX APCH, APCH ISSUED A DSCNT CLRNC TO 6000 FT MSL. AFTER CALLING OUT OF 7000 FT, AT 6800 FT THE GPWS ACTIVATED INFORMING US OF 'TERRAIN, PULL UP.' I IMMEDIATELY STARTED A CLB TO 8000 FT. THE GPWS WENT SILENT AT 7500 FT. I INFORMED APCH OF THE CLB AND THE REASON, AND THEY COMMENTED THAT THE MVA WAS 6000 FT. A FEW MOMENTS LATER, WE ACCEPTED A DSCNT TO 3000 FT. THE ILS APCH CONTINUED WITHOUT FURTHER INCIDENT.
